Dholrhythms is a San Francisco based organization dedicated to raising awareness and promoting the artistic and cultural heritage of India by teaching, & performing the exuberant folk dances of Punjab known as Bhangra and Giddha.

Dholrhythms was created as a work of love by Vicki Virk who was born and raised in Punjab, India and Suman Raj who was born and raised on Fiji Islands. Though raised on opposite sides of the world, destiny brought them together to share their passions. Their love for community, culture, outreach, dance, the arts, and empowerment of women gave birth to Dholrhythms in 2003.

Since its inception, Dholrhythms has grown into a boundless, undefined, and unique platform for people of diverse backgrounds to come together, learn something new, express themselves freely, and dance in a non-competitive and positive environment.

CLASSES & WORKSHOPS: Founder Vicki Virk teaches regular weekly classes teaching Bhangra to both adults and kids at different studios, as well as afterschool youth enrichment programs, and camps. In addition to weekly classes, Dholrhythms special workshops are also featured at all kinds of events and organizations ranging from festivals, cultural shows, fundraisers, galas, all dedicated to preserving the arts and culture.

DHOLRHYTHMS DANCE TROUPE: With a strong passion and love for the art of Bhangra and Giddha, the eclectic group of women who make up the Dholrhythms Dance Troupe have become one of the most talked about dance troupes in the San Francisco Bay Area. Featured in performances before thousands of people over the years, the raw energy and passion which drives this unique mixture of women always leave crowds going crazy.

These women have danced on some of the largest stages in San Francisco and helped create a demand for the dance. Lead by Vicki's Punjabi heritage, they concentrate on bringing forward the ancestral and ethnic roots of the dances while other members help add their own style, pushing this dance form beyond typical boundaries. The result is a fresh and unique synergy of fun, funky, energetic, and absolutely passionate performances that are as unique as this troupe and the audience they perform in front of. Watching them will make you want to dance Non-Stop

NON STOP BHANGRA: Dholrhythms is also hosts NonStop Bhangra(NSB), a legendary world music monthly event in San Francisco that combines live dhol (drum) & tabla players, dance performances/lessons, visuals, painters and DJ's all dedicated to celebrating the spirit of Bhangra. Non-Stop Bhangra was born in 2004 when Dj Jimmy Love and Dholrhythms founders Vicki Virk and Suman Raj teamed up to provide a dance night for students of Dholrhythms Bhangra classes. The First NSB was hosted to celebrate the one year anniversary of Dholrhythms. NSB has since grown into an amazing community and has become one of the most popular staples of San Francisco Culture, having received numerous awards for being the best dance event in San Francisco Bay Area.

Dholrhythms has had the privilege of colloborating, performing, and sharing the stage with some of the most innovative and well known artists and organizations in San Francisco Bay Area ranging from World Arts West, Yerba Buena Center For The Arts, Stern Grove Festival, Pier 39, Oakland Asian Cultural Center, Asian Art Museum, De Young Museum, Jewish Contemporary Museum, Sony Metreon, Golden Gate Park, Power to the Peaceful Festival, Anoushka Shankar, Michael Franti & Spearhead, Ziggy Marley, Karsh Kale, State of Bengal, Delhi2Dublin, J-Boogie's Dubtronic Science, Ustad Lal Singh Bhatti, Dr. Das, Sila and The Afrofunk Experience, BSide Players, Dengue Fever, Native Elements, Blackmahal, Cheb i Sabbah, to the Dhamaal Collective and many more.

You made it look like so much fun, something I would definately like to try someday, and it is a lovely way to share a part of a culture. Thanks for posting, and the best of luck!
